Cognitive Assessment

A cognitive assessment is an examination conducted to determine someone's level of cognitive function.

Cognitive assessments can be performed by a doctor, nurse or other allied health professional.

The importance is that a standardised assessment tool is administered when a patient with dementia is admitted to hospital. It is also important to note that if a person with dementia is physically unwell, results of the cognitive assessment can be considerably affected.

Cognitive impairment that presents as dementia may also be associated with delirium or depression. It is therefore essential to speak to family and carers to establish a good baseline history.

If concerns about mood are highlighted, a brief standardised assessment should be conducted using the WHSCT approved version of the Geriatric Depression Scale.

Case Study

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
