The fire and emergency evacuation policy and procedures at Ulster University are well established, however the new Belfast campus is very different from our existing estate, so consideration as to how and when buildings will be evacuated is detailed.
The fire evacuation procedures will be reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis as the new Belfast project progresses.
Fire Alarm Tests
Keeping in line with UU’s fire safety procedures, the fire detection and alarms system will be tested every Wednesday at 13:10 and 17:55.
During the test the alarm will sound for a short period of around 10-15 seconds. Any continuous sounding of the alarm is not a test and should be treated as a genuine alarm.
Emergency Evacuations
If you hear the fire alarm:
- You must leave the building using the nearest available route by following the emergency exit signs
- You must go directly to the assembly point
- You must not re-enter the building until told it is safe
An air-horn will be used to support the 'All Clear' message and let you know that you can begin re-entry of the buildings.
For your safety and that of others, students, staff and visitors are expected to co-operate with instructions from Fire Marshals, Security Staff and the Emergency Services.
These instructions are detailed on the 'Fire Action' notices beside all fire alarm call points on campuses.

Evacuation lifts are provided across all blocks on the Belfast campus.
In the event of a fire evacuation, accessible evacuation lifts will be operated by trained staff and the University’s Security Team.
