I'm Hannah, a 21-year-old third-year student navigating the hustle of Ulster University's Derry~Londonderry campus. With five days a week spent working and studying on this campus, as well as growing up and living in the heart of Derry city, I've discovered the best spots for drinks, dinners, and weekend fun.

Join me for the cosiest study corners, top coffee shops, and everything in between; perfect for those much-needed breaks or study sessions.

Whether you're a fellow Derry~Londonderry student seeking refuge or someone gearing up to join the university, come along for an insider's tour. Let's explore together!

Staying true to my roots, I chose to study in Derry, for me, a smaller campus with a community feel and relationships with my classmates and lecturers were essential and the moment I set foot on the Derry~Londonderry campus, I knew it was the right call.

My go-to chill spots on campus

Floors 2 and 3 of the MU Block

Definitely the seating areas on floors 2 and 3 of the MU Block.

With a picturesque view over the River Foyle, it's the ideal spot to study or catch up with friends.

Scullery Café

During breaks between lectures, a pitstop at the Scullery Café on the bottom floor is a must for coffee and a hot sandwich to fuel those study sessions, cheaper than any other café in the city and at the convenience of being situated right beside my lecture hall!

Post-class drinks

For the days when I’m not driving, heading to Rock Road Social Student Union is our go-to for post-class drinks.

The walkway entrance is covered with old student photos from years gone by, we always stop and see if we recognise any family members!

With the most affordable prices in the city, and events like karaoke and bingo on, it's always the best craic, and a must for students.

Sometimes, we venture into town for a walk along the quay and over the Peace Bridge, especially in the summer months.

Weeknight treats

My favourite thing to do as a weeknight treat is to head down to Pyke’N’Pommes on the Strand Road for dinner and then walk across the road to Omniplex cinema!

The Strand Road is just a 12-minute walk away from campus and it has so many shops, restaurants, and bars. An affordable city for students An affordable city for students

An affordable city for students

Derry is actually one of the most affordable cities to live for university students so taking a random trip to Waterloo Street mid-week to spend the night in the Dungloe or Peader O’Donnell’s bar is totally feasible, in Derry you can afford to live and have fun student budget friendly!

I am loving my time as a student in Derry, and I would recommend anyone to come here as there are so many things to do and affordable bars and restaurants, the smaller campus creates a real community feel, and all of these factors combined have allowed me to have the best university experience so far!
