As a student engaging with EDI principles not only enhances your personal growth but helps you develop critical thinking, problem solving and cultural awareness - key skills for academic and graduate success
The workshop and online course also covers different equality groups and the policies and practices at UU to support enrichment of the student experience.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
- Identify how inclusion can influence the student experience through inclusive language and engagement.
- Identify different aspects of diversity to promote inclusiveness across different University environments through the development of cultural competency skills.
- Assess the benefits of difference and reflect on the various dimensions of diversity and intersectionality.
- Recognise and differentiate between the principles of equality and equity and interpret equality principles and assess their importance as a central part of student participation and decision-making.
- Understand the different forms of discrimination and how these are manifested through harassment, bullying, and victimisation.
- Identify and differentiate rights and responsibilities of students and institutional accountability to address discriminatory practices.
- Identify and engage with Ulster University EDI networks to support inclusive institutional practices.
- Learn about EDI initiatives that enhance student inclusion and a sense of belonging.
What we will cover
The course has 6 units:
- Inclusion which covers meaning and UU context, equal opportunities, inclusive language and the concept of inclusion and belonging.
- Diversity which covers what it is, taking a diversity approach, dimensions of diversity, understanding bias and cultural competence.
- Equality which covers what it is, equality of opportunity, mainstreaming equality and equality legislation (laws).
- Less favourable treatment which covers what it is, discrimination, harassment, bullying, victimisation, accountability, rights and responsibilities.
- Equality groups which covers sex and gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, political opinion, race, ethnicity, nationality, marital status and persons with dependents.
- Good practice at Ulster University which covers EDI staff and student networks, institutional initiatives and good practice.
Delivery and duration
This is an online course which students can access as and when they wish too. You can work through as many or as few units as you like. Each unit will take you approximately 20 minutes to complete.
Content is delivered in a variety of ways including text, videos, infographics and visual representations such as cartoons.
