We want your study at Ulster to be rewarding and successful and to support and guide you in your progress to securing your degree.
Academic Progress
Your academic progress will be considered by a Board of Examiners or Faculty Board or Campus Progress and Award Board.
Progression from Semester One to Semester Two is normally automatic, except those courses that have a formal Board of Examiners following each semester.
Most Boards of Examiners take place at the end of your semester two when a decision is taken to proceed you to the next stage/year of your course, if all modules have been passed, or, another decision will be made based on your level of completion and whether or not you have submitted extenuating circumstances.
If you are required to defer/resit examinations and/or defer/resubmit coursework to the supplementary period, a Supplementary Board will consider your academic progress in August/September.
Resits
- If you are unsuccessful, you may be permitted in accordance with regulations to resit assessments (coursework and/or examinations) before the commencement of the next academic year (in the July/August resit period), or during the course of the next academic year.
- In either case you will be required to pay a fee for each module or part thereof.
- The fees are reviewed annually and are available in the Miscellaneous Fees area.
- If you have submitted extenuating circumstances these will be considered and you may be permitted in accordance with regulations to defer assessment to the July/August period.
Resits/deferrals Following the Supplementary Period
Following August resits/deferrals, you may be permitted in accordance with the regulations to progress to the next year/stage of your course trailing failure in module(s) of up to 40 credit points.
The examination(s) and/or coursework in the failed/deferred module(s) will be scheduled to take place in the appropriate semester(s) in the next year/period of study.
However, where a module is a prerequisite for entry to the next year/stage of the course, you will not be permitted to proceed to that stage but may be given the opportunity to repeat or take the deferred module(s) as an ‘exams only’ student in the next academic year.
All ‘exams only’ students are required to pay a registration fee plus, for those students repeating, a fee for each module or part thereof is also due.
The fee schedule is available as detailed above.
At Risk of Withdrawal
Students in the following position will have a deferred decision code (DW) until considered by the At Risk of Withdrawal (AROW) Board of Examiners:
- If you are trailing a module(s) from a previous year/period of study and have failed at the final attempt.
- If you have failed in accrued modules totalling more than the permitted amount, as stipulated within the applicable Programme Regulations.
- More information on the AROW process can be found here
