Overview

Emily is a Lecturer in Psychology (Applied) at Ulster University (UU), and a British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, with clinical experience working across a range of both statutory and non-statutory mental health services. She currently teaches on the MSc Applied Psychology (Mental Health and Psychological Therapies) and MSc Psychology Conversion programmes at UU.

Emily completed her undergraduate, MSc in Applied Psychology and PhD studies at Ulster University. She then held research fellow and senior research fellow positions at the Stress, Trauma & Related Conditions Research Centre based in Queen’s University Belfast.  Emily returned to Ulster as a lecturer in early 2024.

Research Interests

Emily has a research interest in the area of applied mental health, particularly in the areas of trauma, internalising disorders, emotional regulation and resilience. Emily’s work focuses on the following areas:

  • The assessment and expression of internalising disorders (e.g. anxiety-based disorders, depression, and PTSD) within adult and adolescent populations
  • The development and maintenance of anxiety and depression-based symptomatology following trauma exposure.
  • The role of emotional regulation as a transdiagnostic factor for psychopathology
  • Unpacking how we conceptualise and measure the concept of resilience and how this relates to mental health and wellbeing.

Emily is a mixed methods researcher and has expertise employing a range of both qualitative and quantitative approaches.

Teaching

Emily teaches on the MSc Applied Psychology (Mental Health and Psychological Therapies) and MSc Psychology Conversion programmes. Emily is the coordinator for PSY723 (Social Psychology; MSc Psychology Conversion), and for PSY873 (Values, Diversity & Context; MSc Applied Psychology). She is also involved in the BPS accredited training of Psychological Well-being Practitioners and contributes to several modules in the Applied Psychology programme, including PSY722 (Psychological Assessment, Formulation, and Intervention), PSY871 (CBT for common mental health problems); PSY782 (Professional Issues for Practitioners). She is a research supervisor for BSc, MSc, and PhD students, as well as a clinical skills and placement supervisor on the MSc Applied Psychology programme.

Research Supervision

Emily is happy to supervise both qualitative and quantitative research projects (from undergraduate, MSc and PhD level) that relate to the described research focus above.
