Dr Emma McConnell


Overview

Emma is a qualified optometrist who has returned to Ulster University to work as a research associate. She is currently involved in the SEE project, a research study which aims to determine the level of vision in Special Educational schools and provide a written report to parents on these findings.

She also works as a locum optometrist in the community, with experience working in both multiple and independent practices.

Education / Qualifications

First class honours degree in Optometry, Ulster University, 2013.
Professional qualifying exams, College of Optometrists, 2014.

Research Interests

Emma is currently involved in a study funded by Action Medical Research which aims to determine the level of vision of children in special educational schools in Northern Ireland by carrying out a full vision assessment in the familiar environment of their school.

A written report will be provided to parents and teachers which will summarise the findings of our vision testing and highlight if any vision interventions or modifications are required for the child either at home or in school.

Prior to this Emma was involved in a study funded by the Macular Society which aimed to determine if higher levels of macular pigment optical density are associated with faster dark adaptation in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration.
