Manufacturing Systems
About
The module develops and integrates the management skills necessary to understand and implement the methodologies of current manufacturing systems. The relevance of product lifecycle management, time compression technologies, lean manufacturing, collaborative engineering, supply chain management and the control of variance are addressed and demonstrated via lectures focused on industrially based case studies.
Successful students will be able to:
- Understand the selection, implementation, utilisation and management of appropriate manufacturing systems.
- Analyse, select and implement modern manufacturing philosophies with emphasis on their implementation, limitations and suitability to specific industries.
- Integrate manufacturing data management and e-business within the manufacturing system.
- Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the source, flow and control of manufacturing information within an industrial environment.

Semester 1 (12 weeks).
Course start date: 23rd September 2024
Attendance
Students will be required to attend class approximately 3hrs per week.
Location
This course is delivered on the Belfast campus.
Teaching and Assessment
Formal lectures, tutorials, seminars, industrial case studies, industrial visit and laboratory demonstrations.
50% Written Exam: 50% Coursework
A 3-hour examination paper will be set consisting of 8 questions. Students answer 5
questions. The questions will provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their
knowledge and understanding of the module material and associated readings.
The coursework element will be assessed via a single detailed Manufacturing Systems assignment of less than 20 pages total length.

Entry Requirements
An Honours or non-Honours degree, HND or postgraduate diploma/certificate in a relevant engineering, technology or science discipline.
GCSE Maths- minimum grade C.
Eligibility
Places are limited and open to applicants who:
- are over 18 years of age;
- are eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
- are ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland, and has been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years; or
- are a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.
