Energy Management & Green Technology
About
We are offering a limited number of free places on our Postgraduate Certificate in Energy Management and Green Technology, fully funded by the Department for the Economy to upskill individuals with an Engineering or Science background.
Renewable Energy and Green Technologies have key skills gaps in Northern Ireland.
There is an emphasis on energy efficient technology and creating demand for new engineering solutions ranging from better forms of green energy to more efficient and zero greenhouse gas emission systems.
Energy Management focusses on the reducing the use of energy through approaches ranging from behavioural change to energy tariff management to technology substitution and smart “internet of things” approaches. Minimising energy use forms the basis of optimal renewable energy integration.
Employers will value employees who can identify financial savings in energy use within the organisation, find new solutions that reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions and engage with sizing, procurement and deployment of new energy systems and green technology.
Delivery format (fully online)
- Teaching will be a mixture of online delivery, podcasts/pre-recordings and written lecture content. Suggested reading materials, tutorials and participant blogs facilitate learning and understanding.
- Assessment is 100% coursework using on-line submission and range from reports to essays.

Further Information
Modules
The course comprises of four taught modules and all are compulsory. The modular organisation of the programme means that part-time mode of study is taken across two Semesters. Each of the taught modules are awarded 15 credit points (all at level 7). Two modules will be delivered in semester 1 and a further two in semester 2.
Current status of energy systems
This module will illustrate the dominant electricity generation systems in use today, the issues that are associated with these types of electricity generation systems with fossil fuel usage and through analysis, illustrate how they might be improved towards Net-Zero tasks.
Energy Management
The aims of this module are to provide the technical and managerial skills necessary to control operating costs of commercial and industrial concerns, to illustrate methods of minimising the use of energy and water sources and thus minimise emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.
Energy Policy, Markets and Economics
It is vital for energy professionals to have a strong understanding of energy market economics to minimize energy transition cost, and maximize potential for new emerging technologies needing to facilitate energy transition.
The teaching on this module aims to create students who can analyse and interrogate policy development, implement robust economic analysis and thereby identify and communicate optimal investment strategies for low carbon energy assets, including generation and storage.
Distributed Energy Resources
This module will provide the participant with in-depth coverage of demand side management and distributed energy resources as mechanisms for the integration of variable renewable energy onto existing and new energy networks.
Entry Requirements
Academic qualifications
You can apply for this course if you meet the following entry criteria:
- an Honours or non-Honours degree or postgraduate diploma/certificate in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
Competence in written and spoken English
Applicants mush provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE grade C or equivalent).
Exceptional circumstances
In exceptional circumstances, where an individual has substantial and significant working/industrial experiential, a portfolio of written evidence demonstrating the meeting of graduate qualities (including subject-specific outcomes, as determined by the Course Committee) may be considered as an alternative entrance route.
Evidence used to demonstrate graduate qualities may not be used for exemption against modules within the programme.
