Acmhainn Dhigiteach Gaeilge Uladh

Digitiú agus Foilsiú ar Chanúintí Beo

Ulster’s Digital Archive of Irish is a project which aims to digitise and make available to the members of the general public a corpus of Irish language recordings on the basis of collections of tapes collected in the 1960s and 1970s by the late Colmán Ó hUallacháin, among others.

The resource features a database where the information is collected and categorised by:

  • location
  • informants
  • gender
  • age
  • professional groups
  • various thematic categories

Whilst a wide range of material has been collected containing native speakers of Ulster Irish, very little has been digitised or categorised and this project will ameliorate this.

A body of this material is currently kept in the archives of the Folk Museum (NMNI) in Cultra, whilst other recordings are held by Comhaltas Uladh and by private individuals.

The project is carried out in collaboration with the Irish Language section at NMNI, Museum of Folk and Transport at Cultra and with our audio-digitisation partner, the Sound Archive at National Museums NI, Cultra.
