The CoSTAR Screen Lab, led by Ulster University, is a cutting-edge research and development facility dedicated to advancing virtual production technologies. Located at Studio Ulster, a state-of-the-art virtual production hub at Belfast Harbour Studios, the lab focuses on revolutionising the way films, TV, and live performances are produced. By leveraging real-time CGI, augmented reality, and motion capture, virtual production enables the creation of immersive digital environments that performers can interact with in real-time, providing a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional green screen methods.
As part of the CoSTAR Network, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Screen Lab aims to position the UK’s creative industries at the forefront of global innovation. The lab will study key areas such as world-building, performance interactivity, and real-time automation, while ensuring equality, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and environmental sustainability are central to its mission. It will also support local companies through challenge calls, offering opportunities to develop new technologies.
With partners including BBC Northern Ireland, Belfast Harbour, Northern Ireland Screen, and Humain Ltd, the CoSTAR Screen Lab will catalyse technological advancements in virtual production, positioning Northern Ireland as a global leader in the creative industries. The project will contribute significantly to the regional economy, generating jobs and attracting industry investment, while preparing the UK's film and TV sectors to thrive in the future of digital content creation.
