Erin McEvoy, Lecturer in Marketing at the Ulster Business School, took to the stage once again at the FameLab NI Regional Final event on 18 February.

Erin’s talk, entitled “Deflating the marketing balloon destroying the lives of Irish women”, looked at the experiences of Irish women on their gambling journey from social gambling, addiction, and recovery. The talk highlighted the impacts of gambling marketing and the importance of gendered gambling research across the island of Ireland.

A previous UK 3MT competition winner, Erin’s flair for presentation and skill for disseminating complex research data into bitesize nuggets of information impressed the judges on the night, crowning her winner of the NI Regional Final.

A part of the NI Science Festival, FameLab challenges participants to break down complex topics in an engaging and accessible way - one slide, no jargon, just pure passion for research.

Professor Vic Simms, Research Director of Psychology, and FameLab judge remarks:

“Famelab is an amazing opportunity to gain training and experience in public communication- previous Northern Ireland winners have taken the skills they have developed to shape their careers. The Northern Ireland Science Festival is delighted to partner with Famelab- supporting the development of research communicators for the future.”

Erin McEvoy, winner of the FameLab Northern Ireland Regional Final comments:

“Public speaking and presenting research are powerful ways to drive important conversations, especially on issues that often go unspoken. My research on gambling addictions and women sheds light on the unique challenges faced in this space, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share these insights.

I am honoured to have been awarded this prize, and I hope my research contributes to greater awareness and meaningful change for women across the island of Ireland. I look forward to the next stage of the competition and learning more about the other entrants.”

We wish Erin every success at the UK Final at the Cheltenham Science Festival in June 2025.
