Dr. Susan Lagdon - domestic and sexual violence
Susan is a research lead and Lecturer in Mental Health in the School of Psychology. Susan’s work has shone a light on the extensive nature of violence against women and girls living in Northern Ireland.
“My research interests include domestic and sexual violence and abuse, particularly the mental health implications of interpersonal trauma and the availability and types of support for victims, using participatory and stakeholder engagement to guide research process.”
Dr. Conor Heffernan - women's parapowerlifting in Ireland
Conor's most recent work aims to develop and support women’s parapowerlifting in Ireland. His wider research explores themes within the sociology of sport.
“My work explores women's parapowerlifting in Ireland, focusing on barriers and facilitators to participation and performance. It aims to highlight areas for development, leading to increased participation, enhanced performance, and greater visibility for women in this sport.”
Professor Joan Ballentine - gender equality at senior leadership level
Next up, we have Prof. Joan Ballentine. Joan speaks on the important issues relating to gender equality at senior leadership level and is involved in developing the Gender Equality Strategy for Northern Ireland.
“By promoting gender equality at senior levels of organizations comprising the NI public sector; and by considering the potential for gender budgeting to bring about equality between men and women, with the potential to impact on policy that tackles gender inequalities.”
Dr. Katie Liston - sport and identity
Last up, Katie is a senior researcher at the Sport and Exercise Sciences Research Institute where she specialises in the analysis of the links between sport and identity, including pain and injury, national identity, gender, and Irish-British relations.
“My most recent research highlights the challenges of achieving gender equal coverage of women's sports in public broadcasting, taking Ireland and Sweden as case studies. It also illustrates the experiences of women working in the industry.”
