Coaching

Coaching can be used to great effect at many different touch points in our work life, as a professional relationship which facilitates learning, performance, and development of people. It is about improving effectiveness and achieving results, with a focus on measurable steps of growth and success.

The role of the coach is to facilitate this through active listening and questioning within a professional relationship of trust, safety, and challenge. The coach does not advise, tell or influence, it is based on the premise that each person has all the answers to their questions and the resources to achieve their outcomes. The role of the coach is to facilitate the coachee in gaining clarity, setting goals, assessing their own resources and taking action.

The need for coaching should be identified in partnership with your line manager as part of your regular development conversations or DAR process.

  • Internal Coaching Panel

Ulster University has a small Internal Coaching Panel, all of whom have a completed a coach practitioner programme of learning, and are participating in required supervision and ongoing CPD.  As colleagues in Ulster they have put themselves forward to be part of the panel and provide coaching sessions over and above their current role at Ulster.

Coaching ordinarily involves approximately 4 - 6, sixty minute meetings, once every 3-6 weeks, arranged at a mutually convenient time for the coach and coachee. The meetings are usually completed within 6 months. All conversations during the coaching process are confidential between the coach and coachee.

If you would like to enquire or proceed with internal coaching please contact pdod@ulster.ac.uk. Please do not contact internal coaches directly

  • External Executive Coaching

External professionally qualified and accredited executive coaches work with leaders to support them to execute their role in a more effective, balanced and healthy way to be a successful leader.

In some occasions it may be more beneficial to appoint an external coach. The People Development team maintains a panel of approved external executive coaches and is happy to advise and provide guidance in this area.

The costs of engaging external coaching is normally paid by the school or department in which the coachee is based and line management approval should be in place prior to coaching being commissioned.
