The Race and Religion Team

In line with the EDI commitments set out in the University’s Strategy, People, Place and Partnership – Delivering Sustainable Futures for All, people and relationships are central to the ongoing success of the university.

"We believe in equality, we celebrate diversity and we foster inclusion."

- Professor Paul Bartholomew, Vice Chancellor

The Race and Religion team work to identify data driven evidence on the lived experiences and on-campus environments of our people, from all racial and religious backgrounds. Our aim is to identify continuous opportunities to improve our culture, celebrate our people and to provide the best environment possible to work and study.

The Race and Religion team focus on the things that unite us rather than those that divide us. We hope our work can help all people within the University community to feel confident bringing their authentic selves onto campus.

Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter

A key operational aim of the Race & Religion team is to achieve the Advance HE Race Equality Charter Bronze Institutional Award by the end of 2025.

“Advance HE’s Race Equality Charter helps institutions in their work to identify and address the barriers facing Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and students, while also providing a framework for action and improvement. Institutions can apply for a bronze or silver award, depending on their progress.”

-Advance HE

Work on the Race Equality Charter is well underway at Ulster University. The Institutional Self-Assessment team commenced work on the Race Equality Charter in early 2024 and now, alongside the University’s four Race Equality Charter Working groups, are progressing with the development of a targeted and evidence-based action plan to address opportunities for Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and students.

Have you thought about joining the BAME+ Network?

We are here to create a community for both staff and students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds to connect and support each other.
