On June 26, 2024, a significant milestone was achieved on the Belfast Campus of Ulster University as representatives from the BAME+ Network and the Ulster University Students' Union (UUSU) came together to formalise a new allyship. The agreement was signed by Rebecca Allen, Chairman of UUSU, and Oscar Kelly, Vice President of Equality and Belonging, on behalf of the Ulster University's Student Union and James Uhomoibhi, Chairman of BAME+ Network, Jennifer Jackson-Smyth, BAME+ Network Secretariat and Courtney Campbell, BAME+ Network Secretariat marking a pivotal moment in the university’s ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
This allyship is a testament to the university's dedication to creating an inclusive environment where all staff and students feel valued and supported. The collaboration with UUSU aims to strengthen the existing efforts of both groups, ensuring that the voices of underrepresented groups are heard and their needs are met.
The signing was not just a formality but a powerful symbol of the shared commitment to equality and belonging. As the BAME+ Network and UUSU move forward with this partnership, staff and students can look forward to a range of new initiatives and programs designed to enhance their university experience. The collaborative efforts of the BAME+ Network and UUSU will undoubtedly contribute to a richer, more diverse, and more supportive university community.
