Biomaterials at NIBEC is one of the key research themes.
Building on the nanomaterials expertise at NIBEC new pioneering biomaterials are being developed for medical device applications.
In particular where the submicron interactions are important to the application for instance in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Novel coatings are being developed that will greatly improve the functionality of medical devices and improve properties like biocompatibility or resistance to microbial colonisation.
The biomaterials team are also focused on the development of cardiac resuscitation technologies and there is work ongoing to maximise its effectiveness and reduce myocardial damage caused by the use of defibrillation equipment.
