Translink and the Belfast School of Art at Ulster University have launched a new collaboration, inviting final-year fine art students to create a unique piece of public art for York Street Station, which serves over ¾ of a million passengers each year.

“Translink is committed to better connecting Northern Ireland, and this collaboration with the Belfast School of Art represents a unique opportunity to merge art and transport,” said Michael Holmes, Translink Programme Manager, York Street Station. “York Street Station is a vital gateway for students and staff traveling to Ulster University, and we are excited to see how students interpret themes of connectivity and growth through their artwork.”

Translink's Better Connected strategy, aligns with Ulster University’s vision of People, Place, Partnerships both focusing on community engagement and the benefits of a strong public transport network. Their new collaboration aims to create impactful public art, showcasing the creativity of final-year fine art students at Translink’s York Street Station, which opened in spring 2024. This initiative highlights their shared commitment to fostering a vibrant community and promoting public transport for all.

The competition comes in the 175th anniversary year of the Belfast School of Art at Ulster University. The oldest provider of design education on the island of Ireland, and now hosting the largest research-active Art and Design faculty in Ireland, students and staff at the Belfast School of Art now play an active role in the cultural and civic life in Belfast and across the world.
