The University of Ulster is giving young people the chance to get involved in sport with the first ever Junior Elks Community Festival of Sport for 2010.

The inaugural sporting extravaganza, led by the Ulster Sports Academy, is now open for applications and will kick-off in May with the Elk Juniors after-schools sports clubs.

Three Ulster campuses –Coleraine, Jordanstown and Magee – are opening their doors to young people aged from four to 16 for a variety of sports activities to help develop the sporting community.

Stephen Street, acting Sport Development Manager, said: “The festival of sport is the perfect opportunity for children and young people to get involved in exercise. No matter what involvement they have had in sport before, the festival is open to all abilities with the main focus on having fun.”

Fully qualified coaches will lead the sporting sessions that cover activities from multi-skills sessions introducing children to basic movement and active dexterity, to soccer, hockey, athletics, gymnastics, tennis, volleyball, basketball and fencing.

It is also the first time that the Ulster Sports Academy will host a Junior Elks disability sports camp, in partnership with the Riding for the Disabled Association.

“The festival complements the Summer Sports Camps that Ulster also offers and has been delivering to the public for a number of years,” Stephen said.

“We have built on the success of these sports camps and our after school sports clubs and it promises to be a full summer of fun activity at the University of Ulster.”
