Introduction to the role of the Course Director

Course Director is a valued position and is central to the leadership and management of university courses.

The course director plays a vital role in ensuring academic quality, and aligning course objectives with institutional goals. They provide guidance to peers, address student concerns, and manage resources effectively. Their leadership enhances the student experience by ensuring a cohesive learning experience, fostering student success and maintaining academic standards.

Because of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Explain the role of the Course Director
  • Analyse the responsibilities associated with the role
  • Reflect upon the opportunities inherent in the role
  • Create a plan to seek further information and support

The workshop is led by Dr Brian McGowan and introduced by the Dean of Learning Enhancement Prof Alex Owen. It is informed by newly appointed and longstanding course directors, colleagues from across the University, and feedback from previous participants.

There is opportunity for discussion and reflection and the workshop provides an overview of the typical duties  to be managed by a course director.

The session is intended for those who are new to the role. Following the session it is important that you have the support of an experienced colleague/mentor to help contextualise the information obtained in the workshop.

The content can also  be further explored and contextualised at the Course Directors Forum provided by the Centre for Quality Enhancement.
