Integrating Practice into Pedagogy: ‘An Organisation in the Classroom' Approach to Enhancing HRM Education at Ulster University
This innovative teaching approach labelled as ‘an organisation in the classroom’ transforms Human Resource Management (HRM) education at Ulster University by integrating HR practitioners from the university's People & Culture department into the curriculum.
Led by an academic and ten HR managers, this case illustrates a unique team-teaching method that enriches the BSc HRM programme, particularly for second-year students studying "Contemporary Issues in HRM." Unlike traditional guest speaker practices, this approach involves HR managers in ongoing classroom teaching throughout a semester, offering students an authentic insight into HR operations within a higher education context.
This practice-innovation is rooted in a shared commitment to making HR education meaningful and directly applicable, supported by a clear structure of roles, responsibilities, and student engagement rules. This collaborative effort has led to positive outcomes, including enhanced student engagement, better understanding of HRM as a strategic and context-dependent activity, and improved employability skills, evidenced by successful industry placements and increased LinkedIn network contacts among students.
The strategic alignment with Ulster University's SLATE aims and ICDF vision underscores the project's contribution to creating a fit-for-purpose curriculum that bridges theory and practice. The case study highlights the benefits of this reciprocal learning model for all stakeholders involved—students gain practical insights and networks, HR managers develop teaching skills and stay abreast of the latest HR research, and the academic enriches his understanding of HR practice within the institution. The ongoing success of this unique partnership between academics and admin managers, as well as the positive feedback from students and HR managers alike, attests to the effectiveness of this innovative teaching approach in HRM education.
