A key issue for the Ulster University Law Clinic is access to justice, particularly in areas of unmet legal need.
Professor Gráinne McKeever and Brian Thompson led Nuffield Foundation funded research on tribunal reform in Northern Ireland, which was commissioned by Law Centre (NI).
The research identified that there is a growing need to support tribunal users, particularly for social security tribunals and industrial/fair employment tribunals.
The research confirmed that approximately 70% of people were unrepresented at employment related tribunals, and 50-60% were unrepresented at social security appeal tribunals.
The Ulster University Law Clinic’s casework, research and teaching is focused on understanding and improving access to justice in Northern Ireland.
