Summer Language Programmes

Develop your language skills on a summer language programme abroad. Continue your language learning following on from a taster course or from school. Or why not pick-up a brand new language?

  • Learn French 

    Université Catholique de Lyon

    Study French in Lyon and immerse yourself into the French capital of gastronomy and the 3rd largest city in France.

    The modern and friendly university campus is located in the very heart of Lyon, an international city in the beautiful area of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. You will have the opportunity to immerse in cultural activities to complement your learning to enable you to practice French outside your classes, to meet new people and to broaden your access to French culture.

    This summer school will cover the core curriculum skills of oral comprehension, speaking, written comprehension and writing.

    Eligibility Undergraduate or Postgraduate students (part-time or full-time). Not suitable for final year students.
    Programme Cost €890 (discounted fee for Ulster students)

    Université de Pau

    Spend a month in the French Pyrenees next summer, perfecting your French!

    The Pau campus offers an intensive 60-hour course; the pace of learning is an average of 3 hours each morning from 9:30 to 12:30. Teachers will use various supports and activities: videos, texts, audio documents, games, debates, films, etc.

    Students will have the option to participate in a range of extracurricular activities including surfing, theatre and trekking in the Pyrenees Mountains.

  • Learn Spanish

    Salamanca University

    Learn Spanish in the popular student-town of Salamanca in the Castilla y León region of northern Spain.

    Students will have the opportunity to improve their Spanish grammar and broaden Spanish vocabulary at this prestigious university.

    Each student will have the option to participate in a wide variety of cultural and academic activities to encourage them to practice their language skills, learn more about the Spanish culture and have fun. Activities include guided visits to sights of interest in Salamanca, Spanish dance classes, a guitar lesson and cookery sessions.

  • Learn German

    Universität Freiburg

    Develop your German language skills in Freiburg, near the Swiss and French borders. Freiburg is one of Germany's most beautiful cities, with its historic old town and gothic cathedral.

    The course will include a variety of conversation exercises and discussions, listening and reading texts, as well as field trips to local sites and weekend trips to nearby cities.

    Programme cost 880€  (full course fee paid at registration - with strict cancellation policy)

Funding Available

The Global Opportunities team are offering scholarships to help students with their costs of undertaking one of these summer language programmes.

The scholarship will reimburse the programme cost of the above language programmes based on receipted expenditure. Successful students will need to provide confirmation of acceptance on to the language course and proof of payment for the course deposit.

Please note the programme cost will only be covered for the 4 week duration programmes stated above, which have 20 hours per week of teaching on average. The scholarship will be paid in GBP to the student, once required documentation is completed. Confirmation of arrival and completion of the programme will be required.

    Visa requirements

    All students are responsible for ensuring that they meet the host country's immigration requirements. This will vary depending on the type of passport they hold. Further advice on the visa application will be provided as part of the pre-departure process. But it is your responsibility to ensure your familiarity with this.

    Please note, if travelling out of Dublin airport, students without a British or Irish passport, may also need an additional Irish visa.

    You will automatically be covered for travel insurance and medical emergency cover through Ulster University’s Group Personal Accident and Travel insurance policy for the duration of this programme.

    Review the cover thoroughly to check it's sufficient for your needs; if it does not cover everything, you will need to take out additional cover.

    Read the Pre-departure Guide thoroughly for advice on to how to prepare and what to expect from your experience abroad.

    Once the final candidates have been selected you will be invited to a number of mandatory pre-departure sessions to help you prepare for your programme.
