Travel Insurance

The UMAL Travel Insurance Policy for students covers medical expenses, cancellation refunds, lost baggage and belongings of staff and students whilst travelling on University business or in connection with their studies.

If you wish to take additional cover outside of this policy it your be your responsibility.

Foreign Travel Advice

Before you travel to your placement ensure you have read the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development  Office  (FCDO) guidance for the country you are going to and have signed up for e-mail alerts.

This guidance will cover the following areas of the country you are going to:

  3. Terrorism
  4. Local laws and customs
  5. Entry requirements
  6. Health
  7. Natural disasters
  8. Money
  9. Travel advice help and support

2023/24 General Placement Advice

  • I intend to study abroad in 2023/24; what steps do I need to take?
    1. Complete our Study-Work-Volunteer Form
    2. Complete a Travel Preparation Assessment Form which will indicate your preparedness for going abroad.
    3. Your submitted form will be reviewed by the Global Opportunities Team if you are on a study placement or the Employability Team if a work placement.
      You will then receive an email regarding the outcome of your mobility and advise you on the current FCDO guidance in your host country.
    4. Remember that mobility will be reliant on FCDO guidance at the time of travel and can be revoked prior to the start of your placement. We ask that you avoid making any financial commitments.

  • Will I need to complete a risk assessment?

    All students hoping to work/study abroad outside of the Republic of Ireland during the 2023/24 academic year will be responsible for filling out a Travel Preparation Assessment at least 2 weeks prior to the start of their mobility. This form will help us and your Studies Advisor/Placement Tutor assess the potential risks of your mobility.

    The aims of the form are to:

    1. Help you to prepare for your time abroad.
    2. Identify in advance any problems you may have during your time abroad relating to the environment in which you will be living and studying, the activities you will be undertaking, and your day-to-day life.
    3. Consider ways of reducing the potential for these problems by using the information and resources available here at the University before you leave.

    Please be mindful when completing this mandatory form, it will be reviewed by the Global Opportunities Team if you are on a study placement or the Employability Team if a work placement and will form part of the decision process regarding your ability to undertake your mobility.
