Go Philly, 2019

"I would tell any student considering a similar programme no matter how nervous they may be to apply for something like the Go Philly, it is a once in a life time opportunity and you don’t want to miss out."

Why did I apply

I applied for the programme 'Aspects & Problems of Current Politics & Governance in the US/UK', as I had a keen interest in finding out more about how my country and its governance compared to the US.  As well as learning about the history, culture, social norms and attitudes of a different country.

I must say it certainly gave me all of this and more!

Opportunities

We got the opportunity to visit a variety of US Universities and listen to some inspirational and interesting talks from individuals from criminal justice to the world of politics. The city is full of beautiful artwork and murals by very talented artists with lovely stories behind some of the pieces. As-well as this we also visited Eastern state penitentiary and got to hear about the history of prison in America and the trials and tribulations the prison itself went through.

As well as all the amazing things we did with the university we also had great fun in our free time.

Free Time

Between going on excursions ourselves, out for dinners, shopping and further exploring the city we really got the most out of the days we were visiting in Philadelphia.  I would tell any student considering a similar programme no matter how nervous they may be to apply for something like the Go Philly, it is a once in a life time opportunity and you don’t want to miss out.

Amazing Time

Shauna Dowling
I met some amazing people that I will keep in contact with for life.

Experience

The experiences and skills I gained will take me very far in my future career.  It is an experience like no other and I would recommend it 100% to anyone who is considering taking part in a mobility programme with Ulster University.
