Green Academy Eco-certifications
Purpose
Ulster University’s Academy Restaurant positions itself to be a leader in environmental performance and sustainability leadership. To manifest this leadership claim, the Academy has engaged in a comprehensive programme of completing eco-certifications. In May 2023, Academy was awarded the Green Tourism Business Award Bronze level. Following this, in October 2023, Academy was awarded the prestigious Green Key eco-label as the first restaurant in the UK and Ireland to achieve this accolade. Green Key is the world’s largest eco-label for the hospitality sector with over 4800+ certified establishments in over 60 countries.
Participation
The eco-certification process is carried out by an Academy Green Champion together with the Academy team of staff. Students are engaged in the process through working on specific certification criteria. The eco-certifications programme is overseen by the UUBS Sustainability Team, who provide training for Academy staff and students.
Impact
The thorough eco-certification programme at the Academy restaurant has strengthened its leadership position for environmental best practice in the sector. Consequently, the restaurant was selected as a finalist for the 2023 All-Ireland Sustainability Awards as ‘Best Tourism/Hospitality Initiative of the Year’.
