About me

My name is Emma Crocket. I studied MSc Business Development and Innovation at Ulster University. Before enrolling, I had a background in nursing, a profession that instilled me with a strong sense of discipline, problem-solving, and empathy. While healthcare was a rewarding field, I found myself drawn to the dynamic nature of the business world. I wanted to combine my experience of working with people and managing challenges, with skills that could drive business growth and innovation. This led me to pursue a Masters degree in a field where I could bridge my past experiences with my future aspirations.

Why I chose Ulster University

I chose Ulster University because of its reputation for excellence in teaching and its emphasis on employability. The MSc Business Development and Innovation stood out because of its practical focus and relevance to modern business challenges. Ulster University’s close ties with industries and its strong track record of preparing students for the workforce were key factors in my decision. The welcoming and inclusive environment of the university also played a significant role in my choice. The course provided an exceptional opportunity to explore cutting-edge theories and practices in business strategy, innovation, and leadership.

My experience

My most memorable experience at Ulster was working on a group project for a local business. This real-world application of classroom learning was both challenging and rewarding, allowing me to collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds and contribute to meaningful solutions.

Furthermore, one of the most enjoyable aspects of the course was the module on Strategy for Business Development. It encouraged me to think critically and analyse the broader impacts of strategic decisions on organisational growth. The module on Global Business was equally captivating, offering insights into navigating international markets and understanding cross-cultural dynamics. The lecturers were outstanding, particularly Nancy Brown, whose skill in linking theoretical concepts to practical, real-world scenarios made the learning experience both enriching and engaging.

Professional and personal development

This degree has had a profound impact on me, both professionally and personally. It expanded my knowledge of business and innovation, gave me confidence in leadership roles, and improved my ability to think strategically. On a personal level, it strengthened my resilience and adaptability, qualities essential in today’s fast-paced world.

A supportive environment

During my time at Ulster, I received tremendous support from the university’s academic and career services. The faculty were always approachable, offering guidance and feedback that helped me excel in my studies. The library and online resources were invaluable for research, and the workshops on career development gave me confidence in pursuing opportunities after graduation.

Future plans

After graduation, I intend to apply my skills in a leadership or consulting role within an innovative organisation. In the long term, I aspire to integrate my expertise in healthcare and business to develop solutions that tackle real-world challenges. My experience at Ulster University has equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to embark on this exciting path.
