In late June 2023, the South American regional office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights held a high-level event on Truth, Justice, Reparation and Guarantees of Non-Repetition in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil. Professor Cath Collins of UU’s Transitional Justice Institute served as academic partner for the event, organising roundtables at which 80 state officials, including judges, joined civil society delegates, including representatives of Abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo, came together to discuss advances and explore ways forward.
The event was held to mark a series of anniversaries: 50 years respectively since military coups in Chile and Uruguay, 40 years since the return to democracy in Argentina., and 75 years of the UN Declaration on Human Rights. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk opened the event by videolink, and Professor Cath Collins provided remarks after a keynote address by Fabian Salvioli, UN Special Rapporteur on transitional justice matters
A short video of images from the event can be accessed via the Twitter link below, and a rapporteur document is planned for later in the year, to be edited by Prof Collins and produced in association with the Transitional Justice Observatory of Chile’s Universidad Diego Portales, which Prof Collins directs.
