Mark Simpson (Ulster University) and Ruth Patrick (University of York) are Instagram researchers in residence for the Sociological Review during the month of June. Images created as part of Patrick and Simpson’s recent participatory study with universal credit claimants in Northern Ireland will be shared throughout the month. Participants’ collaboration with illustrator Hannah Miller and designer Dan Farley has been of critical importance in helping people talk about their experiences of poverty and social security, and the illustrations are playing an ongoing role in bringing the findings and recommendations for change to readers and policymakers. This blog post introduces the project, which was funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and the residency.
