This exhibition explores individuals’ relationship with their data. What does it mean to tick ‘I Agree’ to the T&Cs of apps or web services? Colliding creative practice with insights from law and tech, the exhibition interrogates the power imbalance between individual data subjects and giant corporate data users. User Content? probes what this relationship means to us as individuals and asks how content we are with it?
This interdisciplinary collaboration between creative practice and legal tech is the first cocreation of LawTech Collider, a project at the Legal Innovation Centre of Ulster University, which promotes creative practice as a means to explore law’s ability to control digital technological processes for society’s good.
Under the Festival’s theme of Our Digital Lives, User Content? displays work that has been created specifically to respond to law and scholarship in areas of data protection including:
- Surveillance of fertility and pregnancy data
- Data sharing through social media
Among the colleagues contributing to this event are:
- Dr Emma Campbell, Dr Laura O’Connor, Daniel Philpott and Dr Kyle Boyd (Belfast School of Art)
- Dr Katie Nolan (School of Law) and Dr Anna Pathé-Smith (School of Law, now Open University)
