ID Cards
ID cards provide access to main campus buildings and common spaces such as:
- Classrooms
- Meeting rooms
- Library
ID Cards are available for:
- Staff
- Students
- Associates
Visitor cards are also available.
New cards
Bring your new ID card to reception on campus.
Your card will need to be assigned with the correct access before you can use it.
Keep your card updated
To maintain access, cards must be regularly updated at one of the below locations:
- main campus reception desk
- external door reader
- turnstile (indoor security gates)
Card security
To keep everyone safe, we ask that you:
- Carry your card with you on campus
- Do not share your card with anyone else
- Keep doors that require ID card access closed at all times
- Report lost or stolen cards
- Return your card when you leave the University
Lanyards and card holders
Lanyards and card holders are available on request from:
- Reception (for staff)
- Students Union (for students)
Forgot your card
Reception staff can provide a visitor card.
Visitor cards have limited access rights and last 24 hours.
You are allowed two visitor cards in the same academic year.
Any further visitor cards will cost £5. This will be donated to Mind your Mood.
Lost, stolen or damaged cards
Go to your main campus reception if your card is lost, stolen or damaged.
You may be asked to pay a charge to cover part of the costs of making a replacement.
You can request a Lanyard and card holder to prevent damage to your card.
Visitors
Visitor cards are required where the visitor will be entering access-controlled buildings and spaces.
Request card in advance
Request visitor cards at least 1 business day in advance.
Campus access
- Go to Estates Helpdesk
- Select ‘Visitor access’
- Select ‘Add’
- Enter request details
- Select ‘Submit’
Collect
Visitor cards are available from reception on campus.
Belfast visitors
Go to BA reception for access to BA/BB/BD.
Go to BC reception for access to BC.
Return
Visitor cards must be returned to main reception on departure.
Visitor car parking
If you wish to offer complimentary car parking to visitors, complete advanced issue complimentary form.
Additional access
Additional room access
If you require additional access, ask one of the below members of staff to complete the Access Control Request Form:
- Line Manager
- Head of Department
- Course Director
Multiple student access requests
Contact your campus receptionist to request additional access for more than 10 students at one time. You will receive a different form to complete.
Estates, Facilities, and IT Staff Access
Further access across campuses is available for the below staff:
- Facilities Services staff that are required to undertake cleaning and porterage duties
- Estates Patrol staff that have to respond to fire alarms and other emergencies
- Departmental IT Staff
- Estates Services staff
Access Issues
Card does not work
There is an antipassback function on the barriers to prevent the same card being used more than once with an allocated time-frame.
This security measure is to prevent passbacks and unauthorised persons onto campus.
For all other card issues, contact reception.
Faulty doors
Some common faulty door issues include:
- flashing red more than once
- does not flash and ID not recognised
Doors will register approx 10,000 swipes before the batteries need changed.
Report a faulty door
- Go to Estates Helpdesk
- Select ‘Building Fault’
- Select 'Faulty access control door (card access)'
- Enter details
- Select 'Submit'

Keys
New keys / locks can be requested via the Helpdesk
On moving office or leaving the University, return your keys to your line manager or to Estates Patrol.
