Peer Support for Biomedical Science students (placement)

Connecting final year students who have completed placement with placement seeking Year 2 students.

Outline of Activity

Final year students who have completed either a BSc Hon Biomedical Science DPP (Pathology) or a BSc Hon Biomedical Science DPP (Industry) placement meet up with second year students on a one-to-one basis to discuss their placement experience. They provide peer support and mentorship on their own learning and provide advice on the application process together with the academic assessments required during placement.

Learning Outcomes

Students will have an opportunity to:    
*Prepare and present weekly presentations to a class of year 2 students
*Develop technical skills by using Power point, BB Collaborate and Panopto software
*Improve transferrable skills such as organisation, communication and leadership
*Explain the placement preparation including application and interview process
*Reflect on their experience and provide advice
*Provide information on the required academic assessments during placement
*Engage and answer questions that the year 2 students may have

Assessment Details

Semester 1 Week 2 (1 hour): Initial consultation with organiser
Semester 1 Weeks 3-6 (12 hours): Presentation (Organisation and delivery): ‘’Preparation for Placement’’
Semester 1 Weeks 7-12 (6 hours): Follow up meetings with year 2 students providing additional support where required
Semester 1 Week 12: (1 hour): Survey
