Studiosity Peer Mentoring

Deliver One to One Peer Mentoring to first year undergraduate students at Course and Module Level.

Mentor new students and enhance your skills at the same time

Learning Outcomes

Successful students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate understanding of the issues facing first years transitioning to higher education.
2. Demonstrate a commitment to Studiosity peer mentoring.
3. Provide evidence of delivering one to one support and/or signposting students to relevant help whilst applying the ‘help not answers’ approach.
4. Reflect on their personal and professional development by communicating the skills, knowledge, learning and competencies they have acquired effectively.

Assessment Details

A reflective account of the Studiosity peer mentoring process.

Students will be expected to write a 500 word review of their experience in which they will be required to demonstrate an awareness of how they have developed as a result of the training undertaken and their experiences of delivering peer mentoring.

They should cover the following:

• a brief overview of the peer mentoring approach adopted; *the skills, knowledge, learning and competencies they have acquired;
• the critical experiences encountered and their personal impact;
• identification of their contribution to mentoring first years;
• analysis of the impact of the experience on how they perceive themselves and the impact on their future employability.

In addition students will be required to provide a breakdown and evidence of their training and mentoring effort hours which should equate to a minimum of 20 hours.

Level of Commitment

Minimum 20 hours.

• Each mentor is required to complete 3 hours of mandatory training.
• In addition there will be bespoke training materials available for students via the Studiosity learning hub which students can work through in their own time.
• Further bespoke learning will be advertised at different times for key areas such as, well-being, library skills and the UUSU buddy scheme etc. These will be suitable for those who wish to sign up for further learning to develop their skills as they support first years while mentoring. The effort hours will vary and student can select areas of interest to them. Evidence of engagement and time commitment will be provided as evidence for EDGE credit.
• Each mentor is expected to provide approximately 16 hours of one-one mentoring across the academic year.

As this is a new service it is hard to predict what usage will be like and it is anticipated that mentees on some programmes may make more use of mentoring than others. Mentees log in to use the service and mentors log on when they are available to offer mentoring.

If a mentor requests help and a mentee is available in real time they will be connected straight away. If not an app sends a message to all suitable mentors with times the mentee would like help and the first to agree a suitable time to connect with the mentee gets the opportunity.

Some mentors may get more and some may get less than others depending on mentor-mentee connections.

Each mentor is required to write a reflective account of their learning and provide a breakdown and evidence of their training and mentoring effort hours. This should equate to a minimum of 3 effort hours.
