The purpose of this EDGE activity is to develop your skills and awareness of the needs of students who have moved away from home for the first time and lack the confidence and ability to cook and budget for themselves.

Outline of Activity

Learning Outcomes

There will be two options for this award.

Learn to Cook

Aimed at students with a knowledge of cooking.

This activity will be achieved by attending an awareness workshop and then under supervision prepare a meal within a budget with the objective of improving confidence, integration within the ResLife community, communication and improve students’ resilience. The activity will involve attending a workshop and then being available 1 evening per week (3 hrs) within a designated student flat on campus over a five-week period. The activity sits within the Civic activities for the Edge Award.

Share your Cooking Skills

Aimed at students who enjoy cooking and want to share their skills with students living in the Halls who do not know how to cook.

This activity will be achieved by attending an awareness workshop and assisting students to budget and prepare food. This will enhance the student’s leadership, communication and instructing skills. The activity will involve attending a workshop and then being available 1 evening per week (3 hrs) within a designated student flat on campus over a five-week period. The activity sits within the Civic activities for the Edge Award.

Assessment Details

What to complete: Section 1: About you;

Section 2: Record of participation in the group Workshop. Setting out the parameters for the student supervisors and student cooks.

Section 3: Record of the budgeting and food preparation activity within the student accommodation.

Section 4: Reflective Evaluation

When to submit: Please complete this logbook and submit it by 30thNovember 2019

How to submit: We require the relevant workshop to sign your recorded hours. Please print the completed logbook, have it signed and return it to Residential Services – Coleraine, Magee or Jordanstown.

Level of Commitment

To successfully complete this activity, you must complete twenty hours of engagement. This will involve attending a workshop and completing your logbook, the logbook will allow you to record your attendance at the different elements of the training programme. This will include a Reflective Evaluation, which will allow you to reflect on how participation in this programme has aided your personal development. Outlined below are the sections required to obtain Edge Accreditation.
