Based at the beautiful Derry~Londonderry campus, our Social Work Degree is a mix of academic study and full-time professional practice placements where students will work alongside social work practitioners, to develop the skills required for professional social work practice.
Students will develop their knowledge of social policy, psychology, sociology and law as applied to the role of social work in society. They will also learn how to assess risk, analyse information, and form professional judgements in practice with service users across the life span, in a range of diverse settings including family & children's services, physical disability, substance misuse, mental health, homelessness, criminal justice and older people.
What would the work placements be like?
Placement opportunities are provided by a range of partners including Health and Social Care Trusts, as well as other voluntary and statutory agencies – giving real life experience for their CV!
Students will undertake two contrasting practice placements:
- 85 days in year two
- 100 days in year three
What are the career opportunities?
Once student complete the degree, they will then have to successfully undertake an assessed year in employment before being eligible for full registration as a Social Worker with the Northern Ireland Social Care Council.
