Device Hardware Baseline Specification: Microsoft Windows Laptop Devices - September 2024

  • Device Registration: Windows laptops must be registered in and managed by the University’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) Intune platform. New devices must be registered by the vendor at procurement point. Existing laptop devices can be MDM registered by Digital Services after key hardware data is harvested.
  • Docking station integration: An assessment /consideration must also be also given to the inclusion of a mobile “docking station” and auxiliary screens as deemed suitable for the operational need. A docking station must provide USB-A and C, HDMI and DisplayPort and Wired Ethernet interfaces.
Digital Services recommended that a laptop procurement be accompanied by an appropriate carry bag.
  • Chassis: The device /screen size for a laptop will be an individual selection based upon user requirement /specification and the hardware portfolio currently offered within the NDNA framework and the affordability.
  • OS Version: New laptop devices must be procured with a minimum of a Windows 11 Professional licence /configuration to support subsequent Intune build work.
  • Processor: For new laptops, a 14th Generation Intel Core i5-14500 processor or higher is required.
  • Memory: 16Gb (minimum).
  • Local storage: 500Gb Solid State M.2 storage device (minimum).
  • Networking: Wireless network and Bluetooth support to be standard.
  • TPM Chip: Version 2.x or higher compliance is required as standard on laptops as device encryption is applied.
  • BIOS Services: UEFI, Secure Boot and Wake-On-Lan (WOL) capable
  • Interface Support: To include USB Type-A 3.0, USB Type-C, HDMI video, DisplayPort video. On-board Gigabit Wired Ethernet should be included in the specification as a preferred option in the event of a docking station not being used.
  • Legacy Laptop Processors: Desktops with an intel processor specification i5-8550U or above are currently supported and can be Intune registered /built via Autopilot with a Digital Services standards-based software profile. However, please note that devices with Intel 8th Generation  processors are now considered 'end-of-life' and qualify for a lifecycle refresh via the owning stakeholders.
  • Unsupported Laptop Processors: Processors below an Intel i5-8550U specification are considered to be end-of-life and a hardware refresh should be arranged by the owning stakeholders.
The device should be offboarded /retired in line with University governance requirements.
