Student Accommodation
Residential Services at the Derry-Londonderry campus will have availability for overnight accommodation during the Festival of PhD Research.
- Rates: £35/night for a single ensuite room, £25/night for a standard single room.
- Minimum Booking: 3 nights, with full payment required in advance.
- Note: The Doctoral College are unable to cover these costs.

Travel Information

Doctoral College will cover public transport costs or mileage (25p per mile) from your base campus OR your home, whichever is less.
Travelling by Car
We would encourage PhD Researchers to ‘car pool’ where possible.

Parking at Derry~Londonderry Campus is limited, so we recommend using public transport. If you need an accessible parking space, please arrange this in advance of the Festival of PhD Research. Travelling by Public Transport – Bus or Train
The main Goldline bus routes to Derry~Londonderry (Foyle Street) Bus Centre connect to towns across the province and Republic of Ireland including Omagh, Strabane, Coleraine, Belfast and Dublin. The bus services to look out for include the following:
- 212 / X212 Belfast – Toomebridge – Maghera – Claudy – Drumahoe – Derry~Londonderry Bus Centre.
- 273 – Belfast – Lurgan – Dungannon – Ballygawley – Omagh – Newtownstewart – Sion Mills – Strabane – Derry~Londonderry Bus Centre.
- 234 – Ulster University Coleraine Campus – Coleraine – Limavady – Ballykelly – Eglinton – Derry~Londonderry Bus Centre.
- X3 / X4 – Dublin City Bus Station – Armagh – Dungannon – Cookstown – Maghera – Ardee – Monaghan – Omagh – Strabane – Derry~Londonderry Bus Centre.
If you plan to take the train, services from Coleraine Train Station to Derry~Londonderry Train Station run hourly from 7:43am to 10:43pm, with a journey time of approximately 50 minutes.
Trains from Belfast Grand Central Station to Derry~Londonderry Train Station also depart roughly every hour, starting at 6:05am with the last one leaving at 9:10pm, with a travel time of around 2 hours and 12 minutes.
Claiming Travel Expenses
Please ensure you retain all receipts for travel to claim your expenses.
If you are eligible to claim travel expenses for attending the PhD Festival, you can do so through the Digital Claimant Portal after the event. You can access guidance on how to use the portal using the following link: Requestor User Guide. You will need your Ulster University login credentials to register initially and to sign in each time. During registration, you will be asked to provide your bank account details and your National Insurance number if you are a UK taxpayer.
