  • Want to study on a self-funded basis?
  • Or have a private sponsor?

If you plan to self-fund your studies or have a sponsor who will fund your research study, you can apply at any point in the year.

Step 1:

Firstly, you will need to identify whether we have appropriate supervision in your chosen field of interest to support you.  You can view the research areas at the above link.

Step 2:

Once you have identified a research area, you should approach either the named 'contact supervisor' or other supervisors detailed on the webpage to discuss your research proposal.  Supervisors will be able to advise whether the project is viable and whether supervisory expertise and resources exist within the University to support you.  They may also be able to advise whether any additional project costs (or bench fees) will be required for your project.

Step 3:

In preparation for submitting an application, you should prepare your research proposal - this will be requested as part of your application and is required for all self funded projects.

Step 4:

Submit your application and supporting items, using the 'apply now' link on the research area webpage.  This will tie your application to the correct research area and programme and will ensure that the correct team are invited to consider your application.  To facilitate this, please note the name of the academic member of staff with whom you have discussed your project at the top of your research proposal.

As part of your application, you will be asked how you plan to self fund your studies.  You should clearly specify the source of funds, ensuring that any bench fees are taken into account.  Details for the postgraduate research (PhD) tuition fees can be found here.
