Summary

The financial industry is undergoing a transformative shift, with blockchain technology promising unprecedented transparency, speed, and efficiency in transactions.
However, as it disrupts traditional finance, blockchain faces complex regulatory challenges, particularly around Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML). These regulatory issues are further complicated by concerns over data privacy, security, and the lack of consistency across global jurisdictions.

This PhD project offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of technology and compliance. The aim is to harness the power of AI and blockchain to create a solution that not only addresses regulatory demands but also sets a new standard for innovation in financial compliance. This research will involve developing cutting-edge AI algorithms to streamline compliance processes, automate risk assessments, and build real-time identity verification systems, redefining how financial systems meet KYC and AML requirements.

Financial institutions urgently need solutions that can adapt to evolving regulations without compromising the efficiency or privacy that blockchain offers. Through this project, you will work on AI-driven Regulatory Technology (RegTech) innovations that empower financial systems to meet compliance demands seamlessly. By addressing key challenges, such as privacy-preserving technologies, international regulatory inconsistencies, and data security vulnerabilities, you will be shaping a solution that promotes both compliance and innovation on a global scale.

Project Objectives

* Automated Compliance Solutions: Design and implement AI-based models to streamline KYC and AML processes, improving accuracy and efficiency.

* Privacy-Centric Blockchain: Innovate blockchain-based solutions that meet strict data protection laws globally, ensuring data security and privacy.

* Cross-Border Regulatory Alignment: Develop governance frameworks to bridge international compliance gaps, supporting a cohesive global financial ecosystem.

Aligned with the RegTech Supercluster, this research offers a unique opportunity to drive FinTech innovation by developing AI and blockchain solutions that foster a secure, compliant, and inclusive financial ecosystem.

In exceptional circumstances, the University may consider a portfolio of evidence from applicants who have appropriate professional experience which is equivalent to the learning outcomes of an Honours degree in lieu of academic qualifications.

  • Experience using research methods or other approaches relevant to the subject domain
  • A demonstrable interest in the research area associated with the studentship

Desirable Criteria

If the University receives a large number of applicants for the project, the following desirable criteria may be applied to shortlist applicants for interview.

  • First Class Honours (1st) Degree
  • Masters at 70%
  • For VCRS Awards, Masters at 75%
  • Experience using research methods or other approaches relevant to the subject domain
  • Work experience relevant to the proposed project
  • Publications - peer-reviewed
