Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES)

How can supervisors influence the outcomes of the survey

Supervisors may benefit from understanding the Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (PRES) performance indicators.  This national survey is the main measure of PhD researcher satisfaction and, as such, the University uses these statistics to measure performance in this area.

Being the main point of contact with the PhD researcher, the supervisory team plays a key role in PhD researcher satisfaction across a number, if not all, of these indicators. The scaled questions from PRES are replicated for your information.  In relation to the supervision scale, the following questions are asked of PhD Researchers as part of the survey:

  • My supervisor/s have the skills and subject knowledge to support my research
  • I have regular contact with my supervisor/s, appropriate for my needs
  • My supervisor/s provide feedback that helps me direct my research activities
  • My supervisor/s help me to identify my training and development needs as a researcher

This survey is run on a biennial basis and we would be grateful if you could encourage your PhD Researchers to complete the survey (launches in March and runs through to mid May every other year) as the more responses we get, the more representative the results will be.
