United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

We are passionate about sharing with our students the vital role they each have now and as future professionals in promoting a sustainable future for all. We believe that sustainability is not the domain of one discipline or profession. It is the responsibility of all disciplines, professions, organisations and individuals.

That is why on each of our courses within the Belfast School of Architecture and the Built Environment you will learn about the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the contribution you can make now, and as a graduate in the Built Environment.

Overview

This course focuses on fundamental aspects of law and contractual procedures affecting professional practice in the construction industry.

Summary

The construction industry is impacted upon from a legal perspective in a number of ways. This legal framework has constituent parts that cover distinct areas of the law that influence how those involved in the various stages of the development process interact and manage their relationship. There are a number of features associated with the construction industry that set it apart from other industries. Supply chain management and other processes are often utilised for individual one off projects, across a range of sectors and for a variety of clients. Despite these differences, various legal principles are of wide application, notwithstanding the unique nature of construction and the various stakeholders involved.

It is preferable that those involved in the various stages of the construction lifecycle understand the impact of the law as it relates to them, including the application of common law principles and statutory intervention. This promotes an individual and organisational recognition of the need to examine the economic and societal impact of the overarching legal system and its governance.
