Our tips for surviving Christmas

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, or is it? For many people Christmas is a difficult period they’d rather ignore.

There is no rulebook for how you should spend the holidays, so check out our tips and advice on getting through the next few weeks.

Be kind to yourself

Be kind to yourself

The pressure of being jolly and creating the perfect Christmas can leave you feeling inadequate, anxious and stressed. Rather than battle through, take some time to think about what you’d like to do this year.

Socialising

You don’t have to say yes to everything. Only accept invitations you feel comfortable with or offer friends an alternative catch up in the new year.

The Big Day

Big family gatherings can be chaotic and tense. If a whole day is too much, that’s ok; let your family know you aren’t up to a big celebration and set a timeframe you are comfortable with.

Plan Your Break

Is there a Netflix series you’ve been meaning to get into or a book you haven’t had time to read? Make time for you this year and fill your calendar with activities you will enjoy.

Money Matters

If you’re worrying about having enough money over Christmas, a little advance planning can help relieve some of the stress.

Budget

Work out what you have to spend and what you need to buy. If totals don’t balance, look at what you really need and make a list of essentials vs nice to haves.

Be honest

Don’t bury your head in the sand, accept what you have to spend and let your loved ones know. This way, you won’t be put under unnecessary pressure.

Make new traditions

Spending time with loved ones doesn’t have to cost a penny.

If you normally pay to see fancy Christmas light displays, opt for your local lights switch on or take a stroll and see what the neighbours have on display.

Help is here

Whatever you are feeling, remember you are not alone and help is available whenever you need it.

Friends and Family

If your loved ones don’t know how you’re feeling, they can’t help. It might be difficult but try and talk to someone you trust.
