Daniel Sanusi graduated at Ulster University with a MSc in Global Business and Enterprise, has recently made headlines for winning the awards for the Young Leader Award and the Advancing Racial Justice and Fairness Award at the most recent Advancing Racial Equality Awards (AREA) Night!

The recent awards serve as a powerful recognition of a lifelong commitment to equality and belonging. Driven by the vision of creating a fair and inclusive society where every student, regardless of background, can thrive.

During Daniel’s time at UUSU as Vice President of Equality and Belonging, he worked closely with students, staff, and external organisations to implement initiatives that challenged systemic barriers and fostered meaningful change. These awards are not just a personal achievement but a testament to the collective efforts of a passionate and diverse community working towards fairness and inclusivity.

This recognition stands as an inspiration for future leaders, encouraging them to step forward and continue advocating for diversity, inclusion, and justice, ensuring that progress in these critical areas continues for generations to come. Congratulations Daniel!

Dr Carol Wheeler

Honorary Graduate

Honorary Graduate, Dr. Carol Wheeler is the US founder of the Washington Ireland Program was conferred with an honorary doctorate in recognition of her outstanding contribution to peace and reconciliation. The award of ‘Doctor of the University’ received by Carol is the highest accolade a university can confer.

For over three decades, the Washington Ireland Program (WIP) has played a vital role in post-conflict Northern Ireland and Ireland, bringing together leaders from diverse communities and backgrounds for exceptional leadership and skills-development opportunities. WIP’s mission is to support, inspire, and develop leaders dedicated to building a future of peace and prosperity for both Northern Ireland and Ireland.

On behalf of Ulster University, we all want to say a massive congratulations to Dr. Carol Wheeler for all her amazing work and accomplishments she has achieved while being the founder of the Washington Ireland Program!

Dr Aashish Mathur

PhD in Computing and Engineering

Dr. Aashish Mathur, who holds a PhD in Computing and Engineering, was recently honoured as a winner of the Study UK Alumni Awards in the field of Science and Sustainability.

Dr. Mathur is a distinguished researcher, innovator, and visionary leader, recognised for his unwavering dedication to technological advancement and healthcare innovation. With a strong commitment to innovation, he has consistently demonstrated pioneering expertise throughout his career.

His leadership in ground-breaking projects includes the development of advanced biosensors for early cardiac risk detection and the creation of affordable healthcare solutions, such as a smart bandage with integrated sensors. His work exemplifies the seamless fusion of cutting-edge technology with compassionate healthcare solutions.

With numerous other awards and recognitions to his name, we would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Aashish Mathur!

Dr Cari Moorhead

BA Hons in Sport and Leisure Studies

Dr Cari Moorhead, who graduated from Ulster University with a BA Honours in Sport and Leisure Studies, has recently retired from the University of New Hampshire after 36 years of service.

Moorhead has overseen policy and programme development, administrative operations, marketing, student admissions, and recruitment. Her mission has been to uphold and enhance academic excellence at the University of New Hampshire (UNH), with her primary focus on ensuring that all students are well cared for.

This mission holds deep personal significance for Cari, an Irish immigrant and lesbian, who was honoured with induction into the UNH Diversity Hall of Fame in 2011 and received the Kidder Award last year. Among her most notable accomplishments is the creation of campus-wide inclusivity initiatives, including SafeZones, an educational programme aimed at increasing awareness of LGBTQIA+ students, and the Pancake Breakfast, an annual event that celebrates and acknowledges the contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community at UNH. Both of these initiatives have flourished for over 30 years!
